Shirley Kirkcaldy, working in Mixed-media, Painting

I am a contemporary landscape artist living on Dartmoor which, together with my familiarity and love of the southwest coastlines, greatly informs my work. What I experience when in the landscape inspires an explorative approach to my practice which is both experimental yet grounded and coherent. Colour, contrast, light and texture are elements that feature significantly and form the foundation for what I aim to capture on canvas - an ‘intuitive response to a place and time’. Working expressively in a variety of media, images that exist in actuality, are transposed as reflections of what I see and feel when in the landscape. Paintings are developed from the prolific drawings and visual notes I make on location which later, in the studio, combine with materials to explore ideas created. By subtracting or abstracting information, final images move further away from documentary and towards anonymity, thus, I am inviting the viewer to form their own interpretation whilst always conveying a personal significance. I exhibit my work regularly throughout the Southwest and London and am represented by Wildwood gallery [Dartmoor] and Tidal gallery [Kingsbridge]. I also enjoy holding workshops throughout the year.
