Joanna Shepherd, working in Textiles

My passion is creating textile art that celebrates treasured moments. From making dolls clothes at the age of 4, my love for sewing and fabric was pretty obvious. I went on to teach textiles in schools around the world which developed my interest in colour, culture, people and our fragile earth. Working as ‘Mrs Marvellous – The Memory Maker’ I get to share the important stories using fabric to create framed artwork, cushions and quilts. Specializing in embroidery, quilting and applique I design and make bespoke keepsakes that capture precious memories. For me conversation with my clients is vital as it allows me ‘get to know’ a little about the person who will be receiving my work. This involvement ensures that each unique piece accurately reflects their vision and is truly personal. Much of my work is created using the client’s preloved fabrics. It’s beautiful to stitch the very fabric of a person’s life into a keepsake that will be treasured for generations and a real honour to be given that privilege. For other pieces I upcycle textiles to give them new life. I often wonder what the history is behind the gold velvet curtain or the tweed jacket I sourced; where the raw materials originated, who designed, made and bought them and what stories they could tell! For me it is important that these valuable resources continue to be used, they deserve to be celebrated in something joyful. Another passion for me is supporting those living with dementia, a cause that is close to my heart. Re-investing my profits for social good I create aprons that instigate conversation, rekindle memories and provide dignity. Please do get in touch if you have an idea you would like to discuss. Thank you for taking the time to read about my work, Joanna
