Hilary Hughes, working in Mixed-media, Painting

I am fascinated by natural processes be it corrosion, weathering, desiccation, sedimentation... It could be the patterns made in mud after a heavy rainstorm; the formation of salt crystals when seawater evaporates; the development of lichens on a slate roof or the meandering path of a vein of copper through rock. Paint is made up of pigments in suspension – in oil or in water – and they behave like any other particles. My paintings are an attempt to exploit this similarity to explore my observations of the world around me.
